Simon Russell is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with an office in downtown Victoria, BC. He provides counselling via phone or video and will be offering in-person counselling soon. He has expertise in anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, grief and loss, personal growth, relationship conflict and life transitions. Simon is a client-centered therapist and believes that clients are the expert of their own lives and their own greatest resource. He uses mindfulness, self-compassion and an emotion-focused approach. Simon helps clients practice tolerance of distressing emotions, gain feelings of safety and develop strategies to work on problems in their lives
Simon believes strongly in the importance of a client feeling heard, understood and respected by the therapist. This all helps to strengthen the relationship between the client and the counsellor. The first goal is for the client to feel safe in the relationship in order to feel, reflect, process and express their emotions more effectively. Simon’s number one concern is that counselling is both safe and useful for clients. To this end, he uses Feedback Informed Treatment measures in order to check in with client progress at the beginning and end of each session. If there is something missing for you, he wants to hear about it. Research has shown time and again that it is the client’s experience that determines the success of counselling.
The client sets the goals for counselling and the counsellor and client then collaborate on strategies to address the problem. As a counsellor, Simon will sometimes challenge clients to think about things in new ways or approach feelings that a client is avoiding. This is always done in a gentle and supportive way where the client remains in control of the session.
Simon is a graduate of Simon Fraser University’s Masters in Counselling Psychology program. He has experience counselling in both the community and university settings. He is a member in good standing with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) as a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). Simon is also a musician and enjoys the outdoors with his dog.
