Finding the Right Counsellor

Making the decision to go to counselling is not an easy one.  Whether it be for stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges or any other reason, reaching out is not always easy. But once you decide to take that step, what can be even more daunting is how to choose a counsellor that is right for your individual needs. Whether you would prefer to talk to a woman or man, have an age preference, or have a specific type of counselling in mind, there are many different reasons why choosing a counsellor that fits you is important. Choosing the right counsellor for yourself also equals better and faster results. In fact, years of clinical research has proven that the fit between a person and their counsellor makes a big difference.

But how do you know you are choosing the right counsellor? When researching counsellors in your area it can feel like “window shopping”, looking at countless websites, all with pretty pictures and claims of being the “right one”.  One client described it to us as “shooting a dart at a dart board and hoping it works out”.  However, every person is different and the things and emotions we all go through effect us all differently. When searching for a counsellor you might be tempted to just have numerous free consults to find a counsellor that fits you. This can be incredibly draining as repeating things in so many meetings can be a lot, it is also quite time consuming and could even contribute to feelings of stress.

At Waypoint, we take the guess work out of selecting the right counsellor.  We carefully vet our counsellors; we know their expertise and their style.  We use this to help make every match the right one. You can contact us directly for help selecting a counsellor or you can also book time with us to talk it over.  Or you can check out our list of counsellors and make your own selection.  When you book a free 30-minute consult with a potential counsellor, it includes a questionnaire, so we know a bit more about what you are looking for.  After your consult, we follow up with you by email a day or two later to see how you felt about the counsellor.  If it didn’t feel like a good fit, you can easily try another therapist out.

We are excited to announce that we have some excellent new counsellors who have recently joined our team!  If you are looking for a counsellor in Kelowna, check out Jennifer Love’s profile. She has extensive experience working with children, youth, and adults for a variety of issues including complex trauma, stress, depression, parenting, family counselling and couples’ therapy.

Thayre Christine Fellows is a Victoria counsellor and has expertise in providing support for anxiety, depression, relationships, self-esteem issues and substance use.  She uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) and Psycho-Spiritual Therapy.  Right now, she provides counselling by phone or video and will have an office this fall to provide in-person sessions.

Reaching the point of considering counselling is not an easy step.  At Waypoint Counselling Network, we believe that selecting the right therapist should be effortless so that you can reach your goals sooner and with more confidence.
