What to expect from your first counselling session
If you’re considering counselling for the first time, it’s completely normal to feel nervous or unsure. Many people worry about what to say, how they’ll be perceived, or whether counselling will even help. The good news is that your first session is designed to be a gentle introduction – not a deep dive into everything all at once.
In your first counselling meeting, your counsellor will likely begin by explaining how the process works, what confidentiality means, and what you can expect going forward. You won’t be pressured to open up about anything you’re not ready to share. Think of it as a conversation – a chance to begin building trust and understanding.
Your counsellor might ask you why you’ve decided to come to counselling, what you’d like to get out of it, and any concerns you may have. There are no right or wrong answers – this is your space, and your pace matters.
Momentum is important
The first session is just the beginning of your journey. It’s not about fixing everything right away – it’s about taking the first step toward understanding yourself better and finding support. Be kind to yourself, and remember: showing up is a sign of strength.
Counselling can be a powerful tool for growth and healing, and you deserve to feel safe and supported throughout the process.
And just like going to a gym only occasionally doesn’t see results, neither does counselling. Give the process the benefit you deserve; you need to create the momentum needed to realize change. Your counsellor could suggest booking the next 2-3 sessions before you leave the counselling session. You can always reschedule or cancel – but if you just leave it to booking again when you feel like it, the chances are high that you won’t see the benefits of the counselling. Regular visits are very important to maintain the momentum needed.
Why the fit is important
One of the most important things to pay attention to is how you feel with the counsellor. Do you feel heard, respected, and comfortable? Counselling is most effective when there is a good “fit” between you and your therapist. If it doesn’t feel right after a few sessions, that’s okay – it’s absolutely valid to look for someone who feels like a better match. At Waypoint Counselling Network, we will check in with you to see how the fit is working for you and if, for whatever reason, it doesn’t seem to be working, we will match you to a more suitable counsellor so that you can get the results you want.
