What is EMDR?

EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is an evidence-based therapy that has been used since the late 1980s. It was originally developed for the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and can also be helpful for individuals struggling with symptoms of depression, anxiety, pain or those who just feel stuck in patterns of thought or behaviours that cause feelings of panic. Unlike other treatments that focus on altering the emotions, thoughts and responses resulting from disturbing or traumatic life events, EMDR focuses directly on the memory and is intended to change the way that the memory is stored in the brain. Using a detailed process, EMDR therapists help their clients access and activate their natural healing process.

When we have disturbing or traumatic life experiences, the mind needs time to heal just like our body does when we get injured.

“The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes.” EMDR Institute
